BOY SCOUT TROOP 876

MEDICATION PROCEDURES FOR SUMMER CAMP

Prescription and Non-prescription Medications that are prescribed/needed on a regular basis (Asthma, ADD, allergy, etc.) must be turned in to a Health & Safety Committee member at the last Troop event before summer camp – Troop Picnic in June.  Inhalers & nose sprays may stay with Scout.

Due to the large size of our troop and limited adult volunteers, the Troop requires you to adhere to the following procedures to ensure your son is properly medicated away from home.

1.  Please do not send non-prescription medication, including vitamins, unless these meds are prescribed by a doctor or unless the Scout will need non-prescription meds on a daily basis, i.e., allergy meds. Our first aid station has a large variety of over-the-counter medications, such as Benadryl, Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Sinutab, Sudaphed, Pepto-Bismol, Imodium AD, etc., if needed by the Scouts on an occasional basis, so please do not send these to camp.

2.  All medications sent in pill form must be divided using the white or clear weekly pack (Sun. – Sat.) pillboxes found at most pharmacies. Please prepare a separate box for each dosage time* with the medication your Scout will need each day. With a permanent marker, write your Scout’s name and time of dosage* on the front side of each pillbox and place the box(es) in a plastic bag with a Medication Form for each medication – we must know name of  med, dosage, time(s) of dosage*, and reason for the med.

*AM - breakfast, LT – lunch time, DT – dinner time, & BT – bed time

3.  Other meds that cannot be broken into dosages, such as inhalers or liquid medications, are to be put in a plastic bag with a Medication Form.

4.  All medications sent for one Scout must be contained in one plastic bag, if possible.

***PLEASE DO NOT WRITE ON THE PLASTIC BAGS***

5.  Prescription Medication taken as needed may be left in the bottle in a plastic bag with a Medication Form. Please do not put loose pills in the plastic bags.

6.  Refrigerated Medication – please do not bring; if necessary, bring these meds on the morning we leave for Summer Camp. These cannot be kept at our campsite.

Scouts with:

ASTHMA and LIFE-THREATENING ALLERGIC REACTIONS: Please have your son’s doctor complete the Troop 876 Emergency Plan form. Forms may be downloaded from the Troop website and must be turned in at the last meeting/event before Summer Camp.  If your son is at risk for asthma attacks during strenuous activities, please provide a back-up inhaler for your son to carry on his person during summer camp.  For Scouts with life-threatening allergic reactions, please make sure the medication for treatment of the reaction is turned in as all other prescription medication.  Even if your son has asthma but does not take meds, WE NEED TO KNOW HE HAS THIS CONDITION – should be marked on his Class I Medical History Form – summer camp includes the Order of the Arrow ceremony which is very smokey – we identify each boy with asthma with a small sticker on their backs during the ceremony so we can keep them away from the smokiest areas and quickly identify any emergency situations.

Leftover meds and pillboxes will be returned to the Scouts on the last day of camp unless parents make other arrangements in writing with the Health & Safety Committee.
